Susie and Alan B. Levan Family Foundation Supports Citizenship Programs throughout South Florida
Hollywood, FL, October 7, 2019 -– Philanthropists Susie and Alan B. Levan – and their family - have demonstrated their generosity and care for the South Florida community over the past four decades. Now, through their newly established foundation, the Susie and Alan B. Levan Family Foundation, the Levan family aspires to make an even more significant investment in the community. The Levans recently pledged a $100,000, four-year gift to Hispanic Unity of Florida (HUF) in support of the organization’s citizenship program. HUF, was established in 1982 to ease the acculturation process for immigrants – helping them to learn English, get jobs or start businesses. HUF has helped thousands of children, youth, and adults on their journey to achieving their American dream.
”Hispanic Unity is a gem in this community. They positively impact the lives of thousands of people every year. We are so pleased to support their mission”, said Susie Levan, President of the Susie and Alan B. Levan Family Foundation.
This commitment from the Susie and Alan B. Levan Family Foundation will support HUF’s 20+ citizenship centers across Broward and Miami-Dade counties; they will help 13,000 legal permanent residents to become U.S. citizens. South Florida has the third largest population of legal permanent residents (LPR’s) in the country. Today, nearly 500,000 South Florida residents are eligible for U.S. citizenship. Aspiring citizens attending HUF’s classes learn U.S. history and civics, learn about the interview for citizenship, and prepare their application for naturalization (the N-400 application). Operating for 15 years, HUF’s citizenship program features high-quality citizenship classes with qualified teachers, a curriculum approved and recommended by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), small class sizes and convenient schedules. Program participants are also connected to information and services to assist them with learning English and financial education.
The legacy of the Levan Family Foundation’s gift will also positively impact the financial futures of the program participants they support. Naturalized citizens experience an increase in employment, wages, and homeownership. As a result of citizenship, our communities benefit from an increase in tax revenues, as well as a decrease in the use of public benefits.
